Enjoy yourself while fulfilling responsibility in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.

After the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are excellent. hey provide us with information not only from our textbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.

Frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the teachers. however, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers' guidance, i made remarkable progress. now i've benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.

Learning is a long process; i'll keep exploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.

At the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were really surprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only one day. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinion i turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.

I also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there who could not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. i couldn't control my tears on the day when we left. the precious experience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.

Besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write a play and put it on in our spare time.

Campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have different choices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they'll become outstanding. but there are indeed some students still under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. they're busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.

Finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!

Hello, everyone. My name is , I come from Shandong Province. As everyone knows, Shandong is the birthplace of football. So, today I want to say something about football.

Football is originated in ancient China which was called cuju at that time. Cuju has a long history of over two thousand years. It started from Chunqiu Period and was very popular in Song Dynasty. In Song Dynasty, even the women loved play Cuju at that time . As everyone knows, ,Gao Qiu ,the worst government official in the novel of Water Margin , specializes in playing cuju and by coincidence, he met the prince, and then he was promoted to an aga.

Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the feudal society ,nobody played cuju any longer in Qing dynasty. And now, cuju is protected as a kind of culture heritage in China .

In the 17th century, cuju was spread to Europe and developed into the sport called modern football. In the 18th century, some British soldiers and poor workers began to play a kind of sport by kicking a ball filled of leather , soon, this sport called football became famous all over the Europe.

And now. football is one of the most popular sports in the world. There are more than 4 billion of football fans all over the world. People like football ,because it has magnificent skills、fast speed、wonderful goals、perfect teamwork and handsome football players. For example, Beckham、kaka.

Now, there are many famous football clubs likes Real Madrid,Barcelona,Manchester and so on. They have the greatest players and coaches in the world. For example, Real Madrid, it has one of the greatest players in the world—— C. Ronaldo. He has strong muscles, superb skills, and fast speed. He has a yearly salary of more than 10 million Euro which means that he is one of the most valuable football player in the world. In 20__, C.Ronaldo won the UEFA Champions League and then he got the FIFA World Player of the year.

The FIFA world cup is the most important competition in international football. The World Cup is held every four years, but the qualifying rounds of the competition take place over a three-year period, using regional qualifying tournaments. Only eight nations have won the World Cup. Brazil is the most successful World Cup team, having won the tournament five times. With five titles, Brazil is the most successful World Cup team and also the only nation which have played in every World Cup to date至今, and they will host the 20th World Cup in 20__.Whats more, Ronaldo, who used to be a Brazil player, keeps the record of the most goals for the World Cup.

The World Cup Trophy , is made of pure gold. The bottom of trophy is made of two layers of malachite , which can be carved 17 champion countries. The FIFA set a new rule that the new champion can’t have the trophy forever and it should be given back to the FIFA. What’s more, every champion country just can keep it till next world cup while their name is carved on the trophy

Football is a sport. Through sports, we can become stronger, and smarter. However, football is not just a sport. Sometimes, football is a kind of religion or a kind of belief. It could uintes us together to overcome any difficulties. In some poor

countries, football is the only joy which the children could afford. And sometimes, football could heal the wound. The War could destroy a country, but never a boy’s football dream. In 20__ , Iraq won the Asian cup.

Sometimes, football is violent, sometimes, football can be complicated, sometimes, football could hurt the players. But no matter how it transforms, it still helps people to believe themselves, find happiness and hold to their dreams. What’s more, football is a part of life forever.

"Children over 15 should be allowed to make decisions about their lives without the interference of their parents or teachers. Society should accept that children mature at a younger age and should adjust the law accordingly."

The fact that we are not able to determine the exact moment at which maturity is realized due to the gradual changing nature of the growing process does not prevent us from establishing a practicable criterion by using the concept of a legal age, and placing on it an excessive amount of reliance as if it were a creed.Objectively, since the interpretation of maturity merely bears a local, temporary meaning (e. g. , it is understood distinctly in different cultures), not to mention the diversity of particular individuals, clearly an age criterion is definable only in the sense of statistics, yielding an average result of which the legislation should be adjusted to. However, no evidence indicates the invariance of the statistical result under the vicissitudes of the times.

Persisting in an a priori assumption may not be as highly laudable and dependable as believing in an empirical conclusion. While, both facts and analyses, verifying uniformly the time-dependency of the statistical mature age, suggests the shift to a younger age of children‘s maturity.

In reality, phenomena serving as foundations of the above statement are enormous, such as the manifest superiority of the young in knowledge structure and quantity to their elder generation for a corresponding age, their highly developed intelligence and advanced ability in comprehension and their sophisticated behavior in schools and their communities. Neither could all related evidence be listed, nor should it be ignored. Even with a phcnomenological attitude, one is bound to perceive the indispensability of a change to the old rule to meet the requirement of the new situation.

Analyses yield an identical verdict. A brief investigation of new situation.

Analyses yield an identical verdict. A brief investigation of the environment in which the new generation has been brought up is sufficient to justify all the observed phenomena. Physiologically, unimaginable revolutions in food supply and nutritional structure took place globally after the 2nd World War, which, together with other developments concerning living conditions, guarantee the necessary material bases. Psychologically, the young, confronted with a world of information and education, are entitled to nearly the same rights and freedom as the adults in front of the television or other mass media. They know everything. They understand everything.

The determination of the mature age is based on scientific principles rather than on doctrines. If the young, indeed, possess judgments by no means inferior to that of the generally acknowledged adults, others should treat them as adults, allowing them to make decisions independently. Moreover, there is no difficulty in the law, which is not the truth of the universe, but a sheer compromise of social forces, and have undergone innumerable historical modifications and revolutions with a potential

transformation today.

Though the precise new legal mature age is only attainable through statistics, the obvious tendency implies an absolute modification. With an unknown date of realization, it is expected that teachers and parents should discard the traditional ideas and really treat the young equally when the time comes.

Shanghai residents breathed the most polluted air they had seen in two months on Wednesday as weak cold air from the north brought pollutants to the Yangtze River Delta.

But clean air is expected on Thursday thanks to another round of cold air, forecasters said.

Seasonal factors played an important role as winter is the high pollution season, and straw burning in nearby provinces also contributed to the pollution, experts said.

Shanghai's air quality index, a new air quality reporting system that monitors sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, PM10 and PM2.5, reached 254 by 7 pm on Wednesday.

The figure, which indicated the air had reached the level of heavy pollution, was the highest seen since the index was introduced two months ago, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Shanghai's hourly density of PM2.5, air particles smaller than 2.5 microns, also reached 250 micrograms per cubic meter by 10 am, while the reading was only 60 micrograms per cubic meter early Tuesday morning.

The heavy pollution in the eastern metropolis followed thick air pollution in Beijing over the weekend. Beijing's density of PM2.5 broke the record since the municipality began publishing the data in early 20xx as its figure went higher than 900 micrograms per cubic meter in several districts of the city on Saturday.

Lin Chenyan, a forecaster with Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, said the cold front brought in airborne pollutants from the north.

"The cold snap is like a broom sweeping down all the way to Shanghai, and it brings the dust here," said Lin, adding that atmospheric motion sometimes causes trouble such as that.

Before arriving in Shanghai, the pollutants had left some of Shanghai's neighboring provinces shrouded in smog and fog.

Fifty out of the 72 monitoring stations in Jiangsu province reported medium to heavy pollution on Monday evening, according to Zhang Xiangzhi, deputy director of the Jiangsu Environmental Monitoring Center.

Yang Xin, a professor with Fudan University's department of environmental science and engineering who specializes in atmospheric particulates, said seasonal influences explain the record-breaking data in both Beijing and Shanghai.

"Take Shanghai as an example. It just celebrated its cleanest summer in 20xx - sea breeze from the southeast is helpful in diluting pollutants in the air. However, the monsoons coming from the northwest in the winter usually bring dirty air from the north," Yang said.

Agricultural straw burning in nearby areas also contributed to part of Shanghai's PM2.5 reading, according to Wang Lin, a researcher at Fudan University's Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.

"But it's hard for the Shanghai government to prohibit farmers in the neighboring regions from doing so," Wang said.

According to Lin, the forecaster, Shanghai's air was set to improve on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. The next wave of cold air is much cleaner because of the clearing of air pollution in the north.

Good afternoon, dear teachers and friends!

I' m happy to make a speech here. Thank you for your coming. Now, the topicfor my speech today is “Western Festivals.” I would like to talk aboutChristmas.

Christmas is originally a Christian festival, as you can see from theformation of this word, “Christ-mas.” The first part of the word refers to JesusChrist, and the second part “mas” comes from the word “mass,” referring to amain religious ceremony in some Christian churches. At first, it was celebratedfor the birth of Jesus Christ. Nowadays, although some churches still observethis festival for its religious reason, for most people, including Chinesepeople, Christmas has already become a day of secular celebrations, when peopleexchange greetings and gifts. However, it is still a biggest festival in theWest. It is as important to the Westerners as the Spring Festival is to theChinese people.

Christmas day is on the 25th of December, and Christmas Eve is of coursethe evening of the previous day, the 24th December.

Christmas holiday usually lasts for two weeks, during which most schoolshave a Christmas break. Many families put the Christmas tree in their house, andhang many decorations on the tree. Under the tree, they usually place manyChristmas presents. Giving out presents and receiving presents are what kidslike best about this festival.

On Christmas Eve, kids would put stockings at the end of their bed, wishingthe Santa Claus would come and give them presents.

As to the tradition of giving and receiving presents in Christmas, I thinkit has something to do with the nativity story. In the nativity story, on thebirthday of baby Jesus, there was a bright star shining in the East. There werethree kings in the East who saw the star, and they followed the star all the wayto Bethlehem where the star stopped. They came to a manger where baby Jesus waslying. They worshiped the little baby and gave him presents. I think this is abeautiful story. It shows a spirit of sharing and love.

I like Christmas for the presents kids will receive and for its lovelystory.

Thank you very much!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is always an exciting day in New Year Eve as the majority of people in the world are in very good mood of celebrating New Year. There are numerous New Year parties around the globe where many children are re-united with their families, young couples are together with their newborns, grandparents are taking their opportunities to spend some quality time with their own children as well as grandchildren. And the list goes on and on.

Just what exactly is New Year Eve? In my own view, I think there are two sets of meaning.

First, New Year Eve represents hope and a new start of the year. Hope is important to mankind. The symbolic meaning encourages us to put all our bad luck behind us as we look forward to a fresh start from the first day of the year.

Second, New Year Eve represents bonding between mankind. This important day grants all of us a chance to stay close to someone we love dearly. As we spend time with them, perhaps, we ask them how they are doing lately, or we find other ways to show someones how much we care for them.

What else do we get out of New Year Eve? Joy is the feel good factor. It means we enjoy being with someone. And joy is something that money can not buy in this world.

Thank you very much.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Today I would like to talk about current environment situations which youcan see all over the world. While we are pursuing better ways of lives, moreproblems we are also making. Sometimes we only notice a unilateral aspect of thematter while ignoring its various functions. This kind of negligence, however, may cause serious problems that could be devastating.

It is said that one false move may lose the game. This is proved in ourdaily life obviously. As the economy is growing rapidly day after day, manufacturers are looking for more opportunities to gain numerous profit. Toearn more money, one way is to decrease the cost of the products. They movetheir factories to developing countries which can not only benefit them muchmore profit than before, but also those countries welcome them since they canhelp increase the countries’ GDP.

While it seems we can gain a lot from building factories to produceproducts, the shortcomings of these buildings are becoming obvious. Though atthe beginning, those developing countries did gain a lot of profit. As timepasses, people living surround the factories deposit industrial waste into theriver which directly leads to the influence of human’s lives. Fish died, birdsdisappeared, people moved, and we couldn’t imagine what would come next. Theseindustries also use lots of resources to carry on their production. Largeamounts of carbon dioxide are discharged, we all know the consequence of that, global warming—as one of the most essential environmental problems in the world,is becoming more and more serious currently. That the local government ignoredwas that these factories damaged their environment without any punishment butreception! They didn’t notice the negative aspect on this investment. What apity!

In summary, nowadays, businessmen are destroying our motherland—earth forthemselves. What should we do in this situation? Ignore them or try to take someactions on it? I believe all of us will choose the latter, right? So just do it,nothing is impossible.

That’s all. Thank you.

when a variety of problems plague the information systems, the critical importance of information security becomes the focus of people's concern. it does deserve the unprecedented emphasis. it is widely accepted that information security, to some extent, outweighs other spheres in the field of information. so the related authorities, enterprises, institutions and organizations place the high priority on it.

information security concerns a range of problems- information interception, loss, damage etc. business and military information leakage will have an devastating impact. for the information owners and monitors, they must drive their efforts to enhance the security protection and maintenance. for example, a strict control over the access to the secret data shouldn't be absent. the network and software provider should take a set of tailored protection measures targeting different computer crimes. the security issues should be also considered at the legislative level, so we are clamoring for a law designed to clamp down on various cyber crimes.

a few years ago, i felt like i was stuck in a rut, so i decided to follow in the footsteps of the great american philosopher, morgan spurlock, and try something new for 30 days. the idea is actually pretty simple. think about something you’ve always wanted to add to your life and try it for the next 30 days. it turns out, 30 days is just about the right amount of time to add a new habit or subtract a habit — like watching the news — from your life.

there’s a few things i learned while doing these 30-day challenges. the first was, instead of the months flying by, forgotten, the time was much more memorable. this was part of a challenge i did to take a picture everyday for a month. and i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing that day. i also noticed that as i started to do more and harder 30-day challenges, my self-confidence grew. i went from desk-dwelling computer nerd to the kind of guy who bikes to work — for fun. even last year, i ended up hiking up mt. kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in africa. i would never have been that adventurous before i started my 30-day challenges.

i also figured out that if you really want something badly enough, you can do anything for 30 days. have you ever wanted to write a novel? every november, tens of thousands of people try to write their own 50,000 word novel from scratch in 30 days. it turns out, all you have to do is write 1,667 words a day for a month. so i did. by the way, the secret is not to go to sleep until you’ve written your words for the day. you might be sleep-deprived, but you’ll finish your novel. now is my book the next great american novel? no. i wrote it in a month. it’s awful. but for the rest of my life, if i meet john hodgman at a ted party, i don’t have to say, “i’m a computer scientist.” no, no, if i want to i can say, “i’m a novelist.”

(laughter)

so here’s one last thing i’d like to mention. i learned that when i made small, sustainable changes, things i could keep doing, they were more likely to stick. there’s nothing wrong with big, crazy challenges. in fact, they’re a ton of fun. but they’re less likely to stick. when i gave up sugar for 30 days, day 31 looked like this.

(laughter)

so here’s my question to you: what are you waiting for? i guarantee you the next 30 days are going to pass whether you like it or not, so why not think about something you have always wanted to try and give it a shot for the next 30 days.

thanks.

I love English. I hope I can make friends with many people from different countries. I will introduce China to them proudly in English, Such as Great Wall and the Summer Palace.

I know Rome was not built in a day. I believe that I can speak English very well one day if I can study hard. At that time, my dream will come ture.

That’s all. Thanks for your listening!

Thank you!

Honourable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, good morning. Humanism, by which I mean the will to give people love and care, is the most joyful and meaningful part of being human. From the old days to technologically advanced world, humanism is always telling ordinary but moving stories.

Let me tell you what touched my heart this winter break, one morning when I visited my grandmother in the hospital. Walking down the cold, tiled corridor, I noticed an old man, with his granddaughter – maybe 10 years old – sitting by his side. I was lured there by her voice – light and playful – and after I'd seen them together, I could barely take my eyes away. Delicately draped over this old man's beeping cardiograph was a silk sheet with an ancient, cheerful Chinese poem beautifully written on it – and now, this little girl's entrancing voice lovingly brought these words to life. I stood there transfixed; no longer did I see the family members swimming in nervousness; no longer did I feel the hospital's tense cloud of anxiety; no longer did I hear mortality's soft whispers in the corridors; instead, I saw a startling marriage of juxtaposing images and emotions. I was beholding, I realized, a bewilderingly simple yet overwhelmingly powerful metaphor – one that shows that no matter how cold an environment technology can conjure, humanity is always there. In the forefront or the fringes, it is always there.

For here it was, illustrated vividly before me – the coldness of technology embodied in the hospital walls, while the soulful words of the little girl danced around them in defiance.

This experience opened my eyes in many ways – ever since, I have been acutely aware of, and wonderfully conscious of, the warm heart of humanity surrounding us, whether we choose to recognise it or not. As one psychological theory states, "We see what we want to see". After my experience that day at the hospital, I have chosen to recognize, day by day, the warmth of humanism everywhere I can.

I refuse to accept the negative, narrow-minded, caustic opinions that technology is eroding our souls. I say to them, let the machines continue their monotonous cacophony, for just one smiling face is infinitely more valuable than a thousand churners of binary code; let technological progress develop and develop until it poetically devours itself, because one heartfelt "hello" to a fellow traveller can speak libraries of warmth; let the powermongers and oil barons puff their last cigars, because the love and care, and warmth of humanism will always shine like beacon, reaching out to each and every heart on this small planet.

Although I'll probably never see that little girl or her grandfather again, I'll never forget seeing them there in the hospital that day – and if I did, I'd thank them for showing me how vivid yet subtle, how firm yet fragile, and how invisible yet omnipresent the human spirit is in our world today. Thank you.

Today I come to Oslo as a trustee, inspired and with renewed dedication to humanity; I accept this prize on behalf of all men who loved peace and brotherhood. I say I come as a trustee, for in the depths of my heart I am aware that this prize is much more than an honor to me personally.

The road of history is not level and smooth all along. Sometimes the path will come to a dangerous and difficult place.

It is only with the valiant and gallant spirit of the travelers that it can be passed through.

The vast and mighty Yangtzi River, when it comes to an endless, broad plain, will flow ten thousand miles in a rapid current. But as it reaches a narrow valley with high ranges of mountains, cliffs and precipices on both sides, which look dangerously steep, the river has to force its way through them in a winding, tortuous course. The same is the case with the developing course of a nation's history.

The history of human race is like going on a journey. Some of the places the traveler passes through are smooth and level pianos, and others are dangerous and rugged paths. The experienced travelers, when they moved on to a broad, level road, will naturally walk along with a light heart, but while they are passing through a rugged place they will all the more be seized with curiosity, and in such an extremely fantastic and magnificent realm, will all the more feel a sort of pleasure in an adventure.

When I was nine years old I went off to summer camp for the first time。 And my mother packed me a suitcase full of books, which to me seemed like a perfectly natural thing to do。 Because in my family, reading was the primary group activity。 And this might sound antisocial to you, but for us it was really just a different way of being social。 You have the animal warmth of your family sitting right next to you, but you are also free to go roaming around the adventureland inside your own mind。 And I had this idea that camp was going to be just like this, but better。 (Laughter) I had a vision of 10 girls sitting in a cabin cozily reading books in their matching nightgowns。

(Laughter)

Camp was more like a keg party without any alcohol。 And on the very first day our counselor gathered us all together and she taught us a cheer that she said we would be doing every day for the rest of the summer to instill camp spirit。 And it went like this: "R—O—W—D—I—E, that's the way we spell rowdie。 Rowdie, rowdie, let's get rowdie。" Yeah。 So I couldn't figure out for the life of me why we were supposed to be so rowdy, or why we had to spell this word incorrectly。 (Laughter) But I recited a cheer。 I recited a cheer along with everybody else。 I did my best。 And I just waited for the time that I could go off and read my books。

But the first time that I took my book out of my suitcase, the coolest girl in the bunk came up to me and she asked me, "Why are you being so mellow?" —— mellow, of course, being the exact opposite of R—O—W—D—I—E。 And then the second time I tried it, the counselor came up to me with a concerned expression on her face and she repeated the point about camp spirit and said we should all work very hard to be outgoing。

And so I put my books away, back in their suitcase, and I put them under my bed, and there they stayed for the rest of the summer。 And I felt kind of guilty about this。 I felt as if the books needed me somehow, and they were calling out to me and I was forsaking them。But I did forsake them and I didn't open that suitcase again until I was back home with my family at the end of the summer。

Now, I tell you this story about summer camp。 I could have told you 50 others just like it ——all the times that I got the message that somehow my quiet and introverted style of beingwas not necessarily the right way to go, that I should be trying to pass as more of an extrovert。 And I always sensed deep down that this was wrong and that introverts were pretty excellent just as they were。 But for years I denied this intuition, and so I became a Wall Street lawyer, of all things, instead of the writer that I had always longed to be —— partly because I needed to prove to myself that I could be bold and assertive too。 And I was always going off to crowded bars when I really would have preferred to just have a nice dinner with friends。 And I made these self—negating choices so reflexively, that I wasn't even aware that I was making them。

Now this is what many introverts do, and it's our loss for sure, but it is also our colleagues' loss and our communities' loss。 And at the risk of sounding grandiose, it is the world's loss。 Because when it comes to creativity and to leadership, we need introverts doing what they do best。 A third to a half of the population are introverts —— a third to a half。 So that's one out of every two or three people you know。 So even if you're an extrovert yourself, I'm talking about your coworkers and your spouses and your childrenand the person sitting next to you right now —— all of them subject to this bias that is pretty deep and real in our society。 We all internalize it from a very early age without even having a language for what we're doing。

Now to see the bias clearly you need to understand what introversion is。 It's different from being shy。 Shyness is about fear of social judgment。 Introversion is more about, how do you respond to stimulation, including social stimulation。 So extroverts really crave large amounts of stimulation, whereas introverts feel at their most alive and their most switched—on and their most capable when they're in quieter, more low—key environments。Not all the time —— these things aren't absolute —— but a lot of the time。 So the key then to maximizing our talents is for us all to put ourselves in the zone of stimulation that is right for us。

But now here's where the bias comes in。 Our most important institutions, our schools and our workplaces, they are designed mostly for extroverts and for extroverts' need for lots of stimulation。 And also we have this belief system right now that I call the new groupthink, which holds that all creativity and all productivity comes from a very oddly gregarious place。

So if you picture the typical classroom nowadays: When I was going to school, we sat in rows。 We sat in rows of desks like this, and we did most of our work pretty autonomously。But nowadays, your typical classroom has pods of desks —— four or five or six or seven kids all facing each other。 And kids are working in countless group assignments。 Even in subjects like math and creative writing, which you think would depend on solo flights of thought, kids are now expected to act as committee members。 And for the kids who preferto go off by themselves or just to work alone, those kids are seen as outliers often or, worse, as problem cases。 And the vast majority of teachers reports believing that the ideal student is an extrovert as opposed to an introvert, even though introverts actually get better grades and are more knowledgeable, according to research。 (Laughter)

Okay, same thing is true in our workplaces。 Now, most of us work in open plan offices, without walls, where we are subject to the constant noise and gaze of our coworkers。 And when it comes to leadership, introverts are routinely passed over for leadership positions, even though introverts tend to be very careful, much less likely to take outsize risks ——which is something we might all favor nowadays。 And interesting research by Adam Grant at the Wharton School has found that introverted leaders often deliver better outcomes than extroverts do, because when they are managing proactive employees, they're much more likely to let those employees run with their ideas, whereas an extrovert can, quite unwittingly, get so excited about things that they're putting their own stamp on things, and other people's ideas might not as easily then bubble up to the surface。

Now in fact, some of our transformative leaders in history have been introverts。 I'll give you some examples。 Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Gandhi —— all these peopled described themselves as quiet and soft—spoken and even shy。 And they all took the spotlight, even though every bone in their bodies was telling them not to。 And this turns out to have a special power all its own, because people could feel that these leaders were at the helm, not because they enjoyed directing others and not out of the pleasure of being looked at;they were there because they had no choice, because they were driven to do what they thought was right。

Now I think at this point it's important for me to say that I actually love extroverts。 I always like to say some of my best friends are extroverts, including my beloved husband。 And we all fall at different points, of course, along the introvert/extrovert spectrum。 Even Carl Jung, the psychologist who first popularized these terms, said that there's no such thing as a pure introvert or a pure extrovert。 He said that such a man would be in a lunatic asylum, if he existed at all。 And some people fall smack in the middle of the introvert/extrovert spectrum, and we call these people ambiverts。 And I often think that they have the best of all worlds。 But many of us do recognize ourselves as one type or the other。

And what I'm saying is that culturally we need a much better balance。 We need more of a yin and yang between these two types。 This is especially important when it comes to creativity and to productivity, because when psychologists look at the lives of the most creative people, what they find are people who are very good at exchanging ideas and advancing ideas, but who also have a serious streak of introversion in them。

And this is because solitude is a crucial ingredient often to creativity。 So Darwin, he took long walks alone in the woods and emphatically turned down dinner party invitations。Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr。 Seuss, he dreamed up many of his amazing creations in a lonely bell tower office that he had in the back of his house in La Jolla, California。 And he was actually afraid to meet the young children who read his books for fear that they were expecting him this kind of jolly Santa Claus—like figure and would be disappointed with his more reserved persona。 Steve Wozniak invented the first Apple computer sitting alone in his cubical in Hewlett—Packard where he was working at the time。 And he says that he never would have become such an expert in the first place had he not been too introverted to leave the house when he was growing up。

Now of course, this does not mean that we should all stop collaborating —— and case in point, is Steve Wozniak famously coming together with Steve Jobs to start Apple Computer —— but it does mean that solitude matters and that for some people it is the air that they breathe。 And in fact, we have known for centuries about the transcendent power of solitude。 It's only recently that we've strangely begun to forget it。 If you look at most of the world's major religions, you will find seekers —— Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad ——seekers who are going off by themselves alone to the wilderness where they then have profound epiphanies and revelations that they then bring back to the rest of the community。 So no wilderness, no revelations。

This is no surprise though if you look at the insights of contemporary psychology。 It turns out that we can't even be in a group of people without instinctively mirroring, mimicking their opinions。 Even about seemingly personal and visceral things like who you're attracted to, you will start aping the beliefs of the people around you without even realizing that that's what you're doing。

And groups famously follow the opinions of the most dominant or charismatic person in the room, even though there's zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas —— I mean zero。 So 。。。 (Laughter) You might be following the person with the best ideas, but you might not。 And do you really want to leave it up to chance? Much better for everybody to go off by themselves, generate their own ideas freed from the distortions of group dynamics, and then come together as a team to talk them through in a well—managed environment and take it from there。

Now if all this is true, then why are we getting it so wrong? Why are we setting up our schools this way and our workplaces? And why are we making these introverts feel so guilty about wanting to just go off by themselves some of the time? One answer lies deep in our cultural history。 Western societies, and in particular the U。S。, have always favored the man of action over the man of contemplation and "man" of contemplation。 But in America's early days, we lived in what historians call a culture of character, where we still, at that point, valued people for their inner selves and their moral rectitude。 And if you look at the self—help books from this era, they all had titles with things like "Character, the Grandest Thing in the World。" And they featured role models like Abraham Lincoln who was praised for being modest and unassuming。 Ralph Waldo Emerson called him "A man who does not offend by superiority。"

But then we hit the 20th century and we entered a new culture that historians call the culture of personality。 What happened is we had evolved an agricultural economy to a world of big business。 And so suddenly people are moving from small towns to the cities。And instead of working alongside people they've known all their lives, now they are having to prove themselves in a crowd of strangers。 So, quite understandably, qualities like magnetism and charisma suddenly come to seem really important。 And sure enough, the self—help books change to meet these new needs and they start to have names like "How to Win Friends and Influence People。" And they feature as their role models really great salesmen。 So that's the world we're living in today。 That's our cultural inheritance。

Now none of this is to say that social skills are unimportant, and I'm also not calling for the abolishing of teamwork at all。 The same religions who send their sages off to lonely mountain tops also teach us love and trust。 And the problems that we are facing today in fields like science and in economics are so vast and so complex that we are going to need armies of people coming together to solve them working together。 But I am saying that the more freedom that we give introverts to be themselves, the more likely that they are to come up with their own unique solutions to these problems。

So now I'd like to share with you what's in my suitcase today。 Guess what? Books。 I have a suitcase full of books。 Here's Margaret Atwood, "Cat's Eye。" Here's a novel by Milan Kundera。 And here's "The Guide for the Perplexed" by Maimonides。 But these are not exactly my books。 I brought these books with me because they were written by my grandfather's favorite authors。

My grandfather was a rabbi and he was a widower who lived alone in a small apartment in Brooklyn that was my favorite place in the world when I was growing up, partly because it was filled with his very gentle, very courtly presence and partly because it was filled with books。 I mean literally every table, every chair in this apartment had yielded its original function to now serve as a surface for swaying stacks of books。 Just like the rest of my family, my grandfather's favorite thing to do in the whole world was to read。

But he also loved his congregation, and you could feel this love in the sermons that he gave every week for the 62 years that he was a rabbi。 He would takes the fruits of each week's reading and he would weave these intricate tapestries of ancient and humanist thought。 And people would come from all over to hear him speak。

But here's the thing about my grandfather。 Underneath this ceremonial role, he was really modest and really introverted —— so much so that when he delivered these sermons, he had trouble making eye contact with the very same congregation that he had been speaking to for 62 years。 And even away from the podium, when you called him to say hello, he would often end the conversation prematurely for fear that he was taking up too much of your time。 But when he died at the age of 94, the police had to close down the streets of his neighborhood to accommodate the crowd of people who came out to mourn him。 And so these days I try to learn from my grandfather's example in my own way。

So I just published a book about introversion, and it took me about seven years to write。And for me, that seven years was like total bliss, because I was reading, I was writing, I was thinking, I was researching。 It was my version of my grandfather's hours of the day alone in his library。 But now all of a sudden my job is very different, and my job is to be out here talking about it, talking about introversion。 (Laughter) And that's a lot harder for me,because as honored as I am to be here with all of you right now, this is not my natural milieu。

So I prepared for moments like these as best I could。 I spent the last year practicing public speaking every chance I could get。 And I call this my "year of speaking dangerously。" (Laughter) And that actually helped a lot。 But I'll tell you, what helps even more is my sense, my belief, my hope that when it comes to our attitudes to introversion and to quiet and to solitude, we truly are poised on the brink on dramatic change。 I mean, we are。 And so I am going to leave you now with three calls for action for those who share this vision。

Number one: Stop the madness for constant group work。 Just stop it。 (Laughter) Thank you。 (Applause) And I want to be clear about what I'm saying, because I deeply believe our offices should be encouraging casual, chatty cafe—style types of interactions —— you know, the kind where people come together and serendipitously have an exchange of ideas。That is great。 It's great for introverts and it's great for extroverts。 But we need much more privacy and much more freedom and much more autonomy at work。 School, same thing。We need to be teaching kids to work together, for sure, but we also need to be teaching them how to work on their own。 This is especially important for extroverted children too。They need to work on their own because that is where deep thought comes from in part。

Okay, number two: Go to the wilderness。 Be like Buddha, have your own revelations。 I'm not saying that we all have to now go off and build our own cabins in the woods and never talk to each other again, but I am saying that we could all stand to unplug and get inside our own heads a little more often。

Number three: Take a good look at what's inside your own suitcase and why you put it there。 So extroverts, maybe your suitcases are also full of books。 Or maybe they're full of champagne glasses or skydiving equipment。 Whatever it is, I hope you take these things out every chance you get and grace us with your energy and your joy。 But introverts, you being you, you probably have the impulse to guard very carefully what's inside your own suitcase。 And that's okay。 But occasionally, just occasionally, I hope you will open up your suitcases for other people to see, because the world needs you and it needs the things you carry。

So I wish you the best of all possible journeys and the courage to speak softly。

Thank you。 Thank you。

Dear Judges and Friends,

The topic for my speech today is “Festival.” I would like to talk about myfavorite festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

In China we have several important festivals, such as the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival, the Dragon-boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival.Among them, I like Mid-Autumn festival best, especially because I live inXiamen.

In Xiamen, when we celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival, we do not only followthe common practices such as having a big dinner party with our family, eatingmooncakes, and appreciating the full moon at night, we also have one uniquecustom which is only practiced in Xiamen, that is “Bo Bing”.

“Bo Bing” is a very interesting game that almost all Xiamen people playduring this festival. Usually family members or close friends get togetheraround a table with a big round bowl in the middle and six dices in the bowl. Wetake turns to throw the dices into the bowl. We will get different prizesaccroding to the different ways the dices show their upper sides. Everyone islikely to become the champion or “Zhuangyuan” for the year. There is an elementof luck and equal opportunity in this game. So people usually get excited whileplaying. Also, the game gives very pleasant sounds. The tinkling made by thedices falling into the bowl is pleasant, people’s laughing, cheering andapplauding for the big prizes they’ve won is pleasant. All this adds greatly tothe joyful atmosphere of this festival. As a kid, of course I also like thematerial prizes I get from the game, such as a candy or a cake.

In this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, my family invited our foreign friendsto come to our home to celebrate the Festival together. They have two childrenwho are younger than me. While our parents were making Jiaozi together, we kidsplayed “Bo Bing”. We bought quite some gifts to share with our guests as theirprizes. They enjoyed the game and our get-together very much.

The literal translation of “Bo Bing” is “mooncake gambling.” But actuallyit is not gambling, at least our family never plays it that way. For us, it ismore an occasion of happy sharing and getting-together. This is why Xiamen’sMid-Autumn Festival has become my favorite festival in the year.

Thank you very much!

dear my friends,

do you know what is the most precious and everlasting thing in the world ?money?you may lose everything you have if you don't use money carefull enough.youth?in one's long life youth is like a flash in the pan and no one in the world has the secret to keep his youth forever.beautiful look?many people pray that they can get hold of beauty, but it disappears far more quickly than they can imagine.and when they are in real trouble beauty itself feels helpless.a good job?as you grow older and your brain and hands can't work as fast as before.it will become other people's wealth.

then what is the most precious and everlasting thing in the world?

when you are far away from your family and feel especially lonely, who will you think of?when you stand on the crossoad in your life and don't know which way to choose, who will you think of?when you encounter greater difficulties than ever and need other's encouragement, who will you think of?when you decide to make the greatest decision in your favorite course, who shed cheerful tears when see you get achievements?whose wholehearted blessing will be always with you no matter how far you will go?

yes,it's mother who you will always think of and it's mother's love that willbe always be with you.

i once heard a moving story about a mother.two childrens were drawn into the flood and the situations was very dangerous.their mother jumped into the water without hesitation.but the mother couldn't swim at all.jumping into the water means she might lose her life.but at that time she had no time to think about herself.she just wanted to try all means to save her children.maybe her courage touched the god.the miracle happened.she finally succeeded in saving her both children.and she,of course, felt extremely exhausted.

my friends, mother's love is the greatest love.mother's love is the safest love.no matter you are happy or depressed ,rich or poor ,mother's love will always stay with you.

thank you.

A Girl's Football Story

Maybe you are surprised why I choose this topic.Well, there is a story. Before I met my boyfriend,I knew nothing about football and would change channel immediately if a football game was on.But everything changed at the end of last term.

He——my beloved, broke into my heart with his beloved football. He has a fanatical enthusiasm to watch matches in deep night and a "football brain" to remember all those stars' names, nicknames, likes and dislikes, the clubs' histories and the coaches' preferred tactics and so on.And also he is a member of the college team, and plays it twice a week at least. However,I can only become a mute every time the round ball rolls between us.

One afternoon I was in dormitory and had nothing to do,and then I missed him.Standing on the balcony,I could see the court clearly, and he was running, kicking and shooting as usual.I felt a little bit sense of loss.Roommate made fun of me,"you're his wife, and football is his lover.Wife is always not the opponent of lover." Oh God!Will I become a "football widow"?Surely not!I decided to change myself instead of just waiting until the ball change to a cube.If I know more about football, the one who feel the sense of loss will be him.

Watching matches together with him, surfing the Internet for football news, and paying more attention to other football information,I became sensitive to this world.Gradually I was addicted to the excellent and popular sport.

I know many female fans scream when their favorite football stars appear despite they even don't know what is "offside".I won't be that kind of fans.Football shows us not only those stars' individual charm but also the spirit of sport:strength and beauty, teamwork and fair play. For example, formerly I thought David Beckham's appearance make him so popular but now I know that his long-pass and right-foot free kick are as outstanding as his appearance, and certainly, his pink news is also so outstanding as well.I used to believe that stars wouldn't be good husbands. However,Raul's eternal celebration motion for score of kissing marriage ring really touched me and changed me.

Football is not only a sport to me.I have begun to go through the world and I will let it go on,not in order to frustrate my boyfriend, but because the football itself is waving to me.
